Elrathia Kingi Trilobite in Shale Matrix

Few fossils tell the story of ancient life quite like a trilobite. These Elrathia kingi specimens come straight from the House Range in Millard County, Utah — one of the most well-known trilobite localities in the world — and date back to the mid-Cambrian period, roughly 500 million years ago.

Each specimen is preserved in its original shale matrix, exactly as it was found. As a species, trilobites survived for hundreds of millions of years before disappearing in the mass extinction event at the end of the Permian period. Holding one of these is about as close as you can get to that chapter of Earth's history.
