Handcrafted in Colorado, USA, our Rock Candles blend the raw beauty of nature with human creativity. Each candle is meticulously crafted from a thoughtfully curated selection of rocks, crystals, and fossils sourced from various corners of the Earth.
At the root of our Rock Candles lie a discreet glass reservoir permanently attached to the underside of the rock. Not only does the use of glass reservoirs add to the candle’s visual appeal when placed on your table or shelf, but it also allows for easy monitoring of the fuel level—ensuring a consistent flame for hours of illumination.
Our durable fiberglass wick assembly, unlike traditional cotton wicks, guarantees exceptional longevity. Say goodbye to frequent wick or even candle replacements; our Rock Candles are hassle-free and built to last, never requiring replacement. We even take the extra step of sealing the bottom of the wick - this serves two benefits: easier to reinsert the wick after filling, and prevents the wick from completely unraveling and becoming completely unusable.
Another important step we take is to use a proprietary combination of penetrating sealants on all surfaces of the specimens. These extra steps do not change the look of the stone, but helps prevent the oil or other contaminants from discoloring the candle.
When fueled with a premium lamp oil, these candles come alive, emitting a mesmerizing flame that's anything but ordinary. High-quality fuel, combined with the fiberglass wick, ensures a nearly smokeless and odorless experience—perfect for creating ambiance without any unwanted side effects.
With a burn time of at least three hours, our Rock Candles will grace any space with their radiant glow. Explore the perfect blend of elegance and practicality where nature’s beauty meets skilled craftsmanship. Our candles are more than just candles—They’re like a warm embrace from Mother Earth.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you make your Rock Candles?
Yes we do! These are all handmade in our garage studio near Denver Colorado.
Where do you find all of your rocks?
While we still do take the time to rockhound for some of the rocks ourselves, most of the time, we source them from suppliers from across the globe. This allows us to offer a wide variety of stone in quantities and selections that we'd never be able to rockhound on our own.
How are your Rock Candles made?
The Rock Candle is crafted with a reservoir affixed to the underside of the rock to hold the oil. When filled with a high-quality lamp oil it produces a nearly smokeless, odorless "candle-sized" flame that will burn for at least three hours, likely much longer!
Once we had select the rock specimen to be used as a candle, all of its surfaces are treated with a proprietary combination of sealants to help prevent oil from seeping into the rock or from staining the surface. We permanently attach a low-profile glass reservoir to the bottom. This allows our customers to easily see how much fuel is in the lamp. The low profile means that the candle lies close the the surface on which it is set and not awkwardly high.
We hand-make each of our wick assemblies from large spools of fiberglass and custom made glass wick holders. Once the fiberglass is cut to length, we apply a sealant to one end to prevent it from fraying; a real nice feature when you're trying to reinsert the wick into the candle!
A small funnel is included to aid in the filling of oil. and a two ounce bottle of Firefly Clean Fuel is included. Enough to fill most of the candles at least once.
How do I light my candle?
An instruction card is included with each purchase to guide you or your giftee through the filling and lighting process, but the process is quite simple:
- Remove the wick assembly from the candle
- Insert the included funnel into the hole the wick came out of
- Carefully pour your selected (or provided) lamp oil into the funnel while looking at the glass reservoir to ensure that you do not overfill the candle.
- Reinsert the wick assembly, tapping down the fiberglass wick so that it is no more that even with the top of the holder. This should provide you with a nice "candle-sized" flame once lit.
- Wait for 30 seconds to a minute for the wick to start absorbing the oil.
- Light and enjoy!
When done, the candle can simply be blown out, or you can wait until all of the fuel is consumed.
Are fiberglass wicks safe to burn indoors?
Fiberglass wicks are generally considered safe to burn indoors when used properly. They are designed to withstand high temperatures. In fact the burning point of fiberglass is well beyond the burning point of our preferred fuel - Firefly Clean Fuel. They are less prone to fraying or disintegrating compared to cotton or other materials. Additionally, fiberglass wicks produce minimal smoke and soot, making them suitable for indoor use.
Will my Rock Candle get hot or damage surfaces?
NO! The glass wick holder makes for a remarkable insulator. If you look closely at the flame on the rock, you'll see that the flame is actually about 1/4-3/8" above the rock and does not actually touch it. It may get warm directly underneath the flame, but not to the point where the stone will get damaged. In fact, I can typically place my finger on the rock directly below the flame!
Between the insulating properties of the glass wick holders and the rocks themselves, the reservoirs themselves do not get warm. However, spilling the lamp oil on a finished furniture surface could cause damage so care should be taken when filling.
Can I use my Rock Candle outside?
Absolutely, and what a great addition to a patio or outside living area! In fact, our preferred oil manufacturer, Firefly Fuel, makes a citronella scented oil for such a use case.
However, It is important that you keep rainwater from getting into the oil reservoir. Should rainwater should get into the reservoir, simply remove the wick assembly and turn the candle upside-down to drain allow the water to drain. Then give the candle and wick time to completely dry. Once dry, then add oil, reinsert the wick assembly and use as normal.
Where do I get replacement wicks?
Since the wicks are made from fiberglass, they will not burn, so they will never need replacing. In the event that you lose your wick or it otherwise gets damaged and you need a replacement, just email us and we'll make arrangements to get you a replacement.
What is the black smoke I see coming from my candle?
This is a leading indicator that you have too much wick sticking out above the glass holder. Simply blow the flame out, tamp down the wick so it is even with the top of the glass and relight.
My fiberglass wick pulled out of its holder and has fallen into the reservoir. Now what?
I hate when this happens. But its not a problem I use a crochet hook to fish it out of the reservoir. If you don't have a crochet hook available, just bend a small stiff wire into a small hook and then fish it out.
How long will my Rock Candle burn?
This is highly depending on the type of oil being used and the size of flame you are burning. Most of our rock candles use a reservoir that will hold about an ounce and a half of oil and some hold three ounces. Some of the larger Rock Candles have reservoirs that holder several ounces of oil. Regardless, we would expect the smaller reservoirs to burn a "candle-sized" flame for at least 3 hours, likely much longer.
Where do I get the oil for my Rock Candle?
Our favorite lamp oil Firefly Fuels - Clean Fuel. Its a synthetic, biodegradable, non-toxic and burns cleanly for a very long time. It s available in three varieties - unscented, eucalyptus or citronella. You can buy this fuel from Amazon, or directly from the Firefly website. If buying directly from Firefly, use coupon code: Roccia Roba to save 10% on your order.
Any paraffin lamp oil can also be used. These are typically safe to burn indoors or out. Ultra-Pure Paraffin Lamp Oil is the most common we have found at local retailers like Ace, Lowes, Hobby Lobby and others.
One word of caution - be very careful of the really cheap, inexpensive lamp oils. In our experience, these are typically smoky and smelly. If you stick with the two brands listed above, you'll be fine!
Can I add a scent to the oil in my Rock Candle?
The lamp oil manufacturers say yes; an ounce of scented oil per gallon of lamp oil, but our experience say no. Alternately, you can add a few drops of your favorite scented oil to the OUTSIDE of the glass wick holder before you light the wick. Once the flame heats up the glass, the scent will be diffused. It won't last long, but it is a nice shot once you start the flame. It also means that the Rock Candle can have a different scent each time you light it!
What if the rock gets blackened around the flame?
The only time we have seen this is when we burn the candle outdoors and the wind whips the flame around. Regardless, this is no problem! Since we have treated the surface with a combination of penetrating sealants, the soot can simply be wiped off.
Why is my house getting smoky after burning my Rock Candle?
This is likely happening because your wick is simply too high. Simply extinguish the flame tap the wick down to be even with the top of the glass (or lower).
SAFETY NOTES
Never leave a burning Rock Candle unattended. Always extinguish the flame before leaving the room or going to bed.
Ensure that the Rock Candle is placed in an area where it won't be accidentally knocked over or brushed against. Keep children and pets away from the Rock Candle to prevent burns or accidents.
Allow the Rock Candle to cool completely before refueling. Avoid overfilling the reservoir, as spilled oil can ignite and cause a fire. Use a funnel or spout to pour the fuel carefully and wipe up any spills immediately.
Regularly inspect the Rock Candle for any signs of damage, such as cracks in the glass or wick. Replace damaged parts promptly to prevent leaks or malfunction.
Carefully blow out the flame to extinguish the lamp. Avoid using water to put out the flame, as it can cause hot oil to splatter and spread the fire.
Keep a fire extinguisher, baking soda, or a fire blanket nearby in case of emergencies. Familiarize yourself with how to use these tools safely.
