What Is a Rock Candle and How Does It Work?

By Roccia Roba | Denver, Colorado

If you've stumbled across one of our rock candles and found yourself thinking "wait… is that an actual rock?" — yes, it is. And we get that reaction a lot.

Rock candles are one of those things that are hard to describe but immediately make sense the moment you see one in person. Here's everything you need to know.

So What Exactly Is a Rock Candle?

A rock candle is a genuine mineral specimen — a real geode, crystal slab, or natural rock — that has been transformed into a functional oil lamp. It's not a candle with a decorative rock glued to the side. The rock itself is the candle, drilled out and fitted with a glass reservoir and a fiberglass wick that burns lamp oil to produce a warm, steady flame.

The result is something that looks just as beautiful sitting on your shelf unlit as it does with a flame going. Every piece is one of a kind, because no two rocks are ever alike.

How Does a Rock Candle Work?

The mechanics are simple, but the craftsmanship behind them is anything but. Here's how it all comes together:

The Reservoir A low-profile glass reservoir is permanently attached to the underside of the rock. It holds the lamp oil that fuels the flame. The glass also lets you see exactly how much fuel is left at a glance.

The Wick Unlike a traditional candle wick, our rock candles use a fiberglass wick — and that's a big deal. Fiberglass doesn't burn at the temperatures at which the candles operate, which means the wick never shortens, never needs replacing, and lasts indefinitely. We hand-make each wick assembly in our Colorado studio and seal one end to keep it from fraying, making it easy to reinsert after refilling.

The Fuel Rock candles burn lamp oil rather than wax. Our favorite is Firefly Clean Fuel — a synthetic, biodegradable, non-toxic oil that burns nearly smokeless and odorless. It's available in unscented, eucalyptus, and citronella varieties. Standard paraffin lamp oil also works well and is available at most hardware and craft stores. (Firefly Fuel Fuel website tip: use code ROCCIA ROBA at checkout for 10% off your order.)

The Flame Once lit, the flame sits approximately ⅜ of an inch above the rock surface — close enough to look stunning, far enough that the stone stays cool to the touch. A single fill burns for at least three - four hours, often significantly longer depending on the size of the reservoir and the type of oil used.

Are Rock Candles Safe?

Yes — when used as directed, rock candles are safe for indoor or outdoor use. A few things worth knowing:

  • The rock itself stays cool. The glass wick holder acts as a remarkable insulator, and the flame doesn't actually touch the stone.
  • The reservoir stays cool too. Between the insulating properties of the glass and the rock, the oil reservoir doesn't get warm during burning.
  • Fiberglass wicks produce minimal smoke and soot, making them well suited for indoor use — especially when paired with a quality lamp oil like Firefly Clean Fuel.
  • As with any open flame, never leave a burning rock candle unattended, keep it away from children and pets, and allow it to cool completely before refueling.

How Are Roccia Roba Rock Candles Made?

Every rock candle we sell is handmade in our garage studio near Denver, Colorado. Here's our process:

We start by selecting the right specimen — each rock is chosen for its visual character, shape, and suitability as a candle base. Once selected, all surfaces of the rock are treated with a proprietary combination of penetrating sealants that prevent oil from seeping into the stone or staining the surface without changing the look of the rock.

We then permanently attach a low-profile glass reservoir to the underside and hand-make a fiberglass wick assembly from large spools of fiberglass and custom glass wick holders. Every wick is cut to length, sealed at one end, and assembled by hand.

Each completed candle ships with a small funnel for easy filling and a 2oz bottle of Firefly Clean Fuel to get you started — enough to fill most candles at least once.

What Kinds of Rocks Are Used?

We work with a wide variety of natural specimens depending on what we're able to source — geodes, crystal slabs, agate, amethyst, sodalite, quartz, and many others. Each piece is selected individually, which means every rock candle in our shop is genuinely unique. What you see in the photos is exactly what you receive.
