Evolution of Oil Lamps - Prehistoric Rock Lamps to Modern Day Rock Decor from Roccia Roba
Oil lanterns have been used as a source of light for centuries. The earliest identified oil lamps date back to ancient times, over 15,000 years ago where a prehistoric lamp was found in a cave in Lasceau France in 1940 (pictured below). Some archeologists theorize that a form of oil lamps may have been used as far back as 70,000 years ago!
Oil lamps dating to around 4000 BC have been found in Egypt (pictured below) where they were used for centuries, not only for the illumination of the home, but also in religious ritual, which was an integral part of daily life at the time. Records also tell us that ancient Greece had a famous, large oil lamp called “the golden lamp”. It was was kept in the Acropolis in Athens. It burned daily required only one refill of oil per year.
In ancient Rome, oil lamps (pictured below) were made from glass or metal and were used for both practical and decorative purposes. These lamps were fueled by olive oil and were used in homes, public spaces, and on ships.
In the Middle Ages, oil lamps became more widespread as a source of light in homes and were made from a variety of materials including metal, glass, and pottery. They were fueled by various types of oil including animal fat, olive oil, and whale oil.
During the 18th century, the invention of the Argand lamp revolutionized oil lamp design. This lamp featured a glass chimney that increased the efficiency of the flame and made the lamp brighter. This design was widely used in homes and businesses throughout the 19th century.
Of course, by the 20th century the invention of the electric light and its evolution has led to the decline of oil lanterns as a primary source of light.
In modern times, oil lamps are still used as charming pieces of home decor, often being used as centerpieces on dining tables, mantles or side tables. They are used as accent lighting in rooms with low lighting, adding a warm and inviting atmosphere. They also can be found in modern decorating schemes, contrasting their charm with sleek, contemporary furniture and accessories. Oil lamps can add a unique touch to any decor style and are a great way to create a warm and inviting atmosphere in any room.

These one-of-a-kind Rock Candles are crafted with a glass reservoir permanently affixed to the underside of the rock to hold the oil.
We also take care to seal all surfaces of the rock to help prevent oil from seeping into the rock or from staining the surface.
The wicks are made of fiberglass – they do not burn and never need to be replaced! We actually spend the time to seal the base of the wicks so they do not fray which makes it much easier to put them back in the lamp after it is filled with oil.
